Broken buffet leg

Thank author of this post/commentI just picked up this great piece and when I was removing the finish I noticed the leg was cracked. After I moved it in the house the leg cracked even more. It is about to completly break. How can fix it?

It wont let me post a link to where I have pictures.

Thanks for all your help!!!

Hello Michelle, too bad we can't see pictures of the leg.

There is a chance this leg is made up of several pieces of wood glued together, and sometimes the glue joints simply begin to come undone or it may be a fault running along the grain, either can be fixed easily.

You'll need a couple of clamps and ordinary wood glue, and a wet rag.

If this is a clean crack: open it gently and work some glue into it with a spatula, make sure both sides of the crack are covered with a good coat of glue and proceed to clamp tight, wipe off all the excess with the wet rag and wipe clean with a paper towel.Allow to dry overnight.

If this is an old glue joint: begin by removing as much of the old glue from both surfaces by scraping it , this maybe easier said than done. The best thing to do would be to lay the buffet on its back so that any of the stuff you scrape off won't remain trapped in the crack.Once you are done with the cleaning, proceed to work some fresh glue in , clamp, wipe and dry.

Wish you the best.
