Thank author of this post/commentWould painting the trim a black or charcoal color look bad against the color of the carpet? I like the clean feel that the white will give to the room and I'm looking for a nice modern design and thought about black trim. Any other suggestions? And if I do paint the trim a dark color, should the switch plates and outlet covers be painted that color too?

I agree that recreation rooms should be clean and clear in the eyes of the visitors. So if I were in your place, I would rather paint the walls white. It might not that very attractive, but it brings peace and calmness to the people that use the gym or recreation rooms.

Well, that really depends upon what color your carpet is. If the carpet is a lighter color, then black should go very well with it, and the black, white and one muted or calm color should look rather nice, only I would not paint the outlets and switches black as that will put undue emphasis on them If you want, you could paint very thin borders around them to lightly bring them out.
