I'm working on refinishing my dining room chairs, not coming out good at all. An I sanded down 3 of my four chairs and used a stain+varnish, each chair came out a different color and just looks totally awful. What did I do wrong and how do I fix it? I am trying to get my light wood dining set to match the rest of my dark furniture and now I have totally messed it up and my husband works to much to help. I am a handy women (have to be with a military husband) and I want to get this project finished and looking fantastic without hiring someone to do it for me. Any suggestions or tips? Thanks
That is frustrating. I don't know much about refinishing also, because of that I just try to use clear varnish to finish surfaces especially wood. That way I just highlight the natural color of the wood. Maybe you can also ask the store where you buy paints and stuff to mix the right color for you. There must be an expert there who you can ask.
It is very important to maintain the good appearance of our furniture at home. Hence, when you fix and refinish it make sure that you use good materials with excellent quality so that you won't be wasting your money. It is quite difficult to maintain some furniture especially wooden ones so check helpful tips for the refinishing of it. Perhaps a good furniture maker can help. Great day to all.
Sorry to hear about what happened to your dining room chairs Ada. I know how you feel because I was in the very same position when I tried to refinished some pieces of furniture at home. What I did, I just continued refinishing it until it became fine and I just had it repainted with the color that I want. Maybe you can have it handled by a pro Ada. Good luck!
I agree that perhaps you should try adding some more coats of varnish to the chairs that are a lighter color, as if your varnish has color, then perhaps you added it more thickly on one than another. Also, are you absolutely sure that you used the same varnish for all chairs, and that all the chairs were the same sort of wood to begin with? If all else fails, sand them down and paint them.
I have difficulties in refinishing my dining room chairs. And thanks for all of the refinishing tips that you shared here. Now I have some ideas on what to do with our old dining room chairs. I find it not advisable to throw them just yet for they still have use to us. And I think that I can be able to do something great from our old dining chairs.
| "Ada's Mistake"
Hello Ada, read your post and I'm sorry you find yourself with results you didn't anticipate.I believe you went wrong by not removing the old finish first. To fix it : strip the finish off ...of all the chairs , down to bare wood. allow to dry, sand evenly: once with 150 grit and then with 180. Choose a stain slightly darker than the color you are trying to match, apply one coat of stain , allow to dry and start to coat with finish.Use clear finish, switch to the colored finish and then a final coat of clear.
