Yahoo! Answers: Guitar refinishing question?

Thank author of this post/commentMy one bass has a slightly transparent matte black finish. It is a basswood body. I would like to refinish it to a colored transparent glossy finish. Kicking around the idea of a burst, but I've never done this before. If possible, I would like to use a water based dye applied by hand, not sprayed. I know that basswood isn't the most attractive of woods, but, I think it will look okay. I'm looking for tips or suggestions and opinions on how a transparent finish on basswood would look. Thank you very much. That was a lot of very helpful information.

I have a guitar of my own and I refinish it in my own way. It was quite good and attractive as well. It is important to start by removing strings and all hardware and electronics from your instrument so that you can work better with the part you want to refinish. Remove the old finish. When you refinish it, it would be better to use water-based finishes. It's more durable for me.

Are you asking about doing this job yourself or having someone do it for you? If you do not mind having it look like you did it then I am sure you can do a good job by looking up the steps online and being very careful. But if you want it to look as good as new then you should definitely take it to a place to have it done.

Oh well, based on my personal experience I can definitely say that doing such job would be much better if you do it yourself. For it would mean much money if you let others do the refinishing.

And these tips on refinishing instruments, especially guitars are great for me, and probably for those who might be wondering on the same stuff as well. More tips here please on dealing with instruments.
